Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are extremely efficient compared to gas, oil, or LPG boilers, as well as other energy sources. Installing an air source heat pump could potentially save you hundreds of pounds each year. And with grants available to help with the cost of installation, it just makes sense for many homeowners to choose an air source heat pump for their home heating upgrade.

Installing an air source heat pump can also allow you to keep your home cool in the summer. With increasing temperatures during the summer months, this means you can stay comfortable at home while helping to combat climate change with renewable energy.

Save Money

Air source heat pumps are an efficient heating option that can help you save money. Both installing and running an air source heat pump may be more cost-effective than traditional heating options. They’re multiple times more efficient and you can get help with installation costs.

Reduce Carbon Emissions

Reduce your reliance on fossil fuels with a much more eco-friendly heating option. Make your carbon footprint smaller and play your part in combating climate change with an air source heat pump.

Add Value to Your Property

A property with an air source heat pump may be perceived as more valuable if you later decide to sell. The heat pump is already installed, reducing costs for future owners, who are increasingly looking for more energy-efficient homes.

Take Control of Your Heating

Installing an air source heat pump gives you more control of your home’s heating, and can even allow you to benefit from air conditioning in your home at the same time. Install your heat pump with a smart thermostat and you will gain complete control over the heating and cooling in your home without the reliance on fossil fuels.

If you’re not convinced of the power of an air source heat pump, let Polkadot show you the potential savings you could make with a clear example. This case study demonstrates how an air source heat pump can cost less to install and run compared to a new gas boiler.

Instead of making the repairs, this is clearly a good opportunity to upgrade the existing heating. A new gas boiler is an option but the house has a back garden with enough space to fit a heat pump. Most heat pumps are approximately 1.2m wide x 0.5m deep x 0.8m high.

If the customer chooses to install a new gas boiler, we would install a Worcester Bosch boiler. As Worcester Approved Installers, we can get our customers long warranties and 0% finance to cover the costs. A new Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 18kW system boiler and central heating boiler can come with a 12-year warranty, and a new smart thermostat and programmer complete the efficient new system.

The total cost of this would be £2,900.

The other option is to replace the gas boiler with an air source heat pump. We like to use Clivet heat pumps for their fantastic temperature modulation technology, simple control system, and 7-year warranty. Installing a heat pump would also require the installation of a heat pump-compatible hot water cylinder. This will help make the whole system 30% more efficient overall.

A Clivet 8kW heat pump, 200L heat pump hot water cylinder, plus filters and fittings will amount to a total cost (after the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant has been applied) of £1,800.

As you can see, installing an air source heat pump would be the cheaper option with the help of the BUS grant. But what about running costs?

The predicted running costs, taking into account an 8kW heat loss calculation, are:

  1. Gas boiler: £200 per month
  2. Heat pump: £100 per month

Not only would installing an air source heat pump cost less than installing a brand new boiler, but it would most likely also cost less to run.

Is My Home Suitable for an Air Source Heat Pump?

The benefits of air source heat pumps are clear, but they’re not always the best choice for every home. It’s important to look at your individual circumstances and check that your property is suitable for the installation of an air source heat pump.

Firstly, an air source heat pump is unlikely to be the best option if you already have an efficient boiler. There’s no need to replace an A-rated gas boiler with a heat pump, as new boilers are already very efficient. However, if you’re replacing a less efficient or older boiler, an air source heat pump is likely to be a smart replacement.

Secondly, your property needs to be suitable for an air source heat pump. It needs to be the right size to gain the most efficiency and to ensure there is space for the heat pump to be installed. An air source heat pump needs a small amount of space outside and some space inside for a hot water tank.
