Top Tips for Summer

The wonderful British summer is well and truly here, and the sunshine is glorious. Now is a great opportunity to ensure your home – including all things plumbing and heating – are in order.

Inspect for Leaks
Summer is the best time to check for leaks. Individually inspect each of the elements that use water inside and outside of your house: taps, pipes under the sink, and shower-heads. You’re looking for rust, corrosion, leaks, broken or bent parts or other signs of damage. A good trick is to use a few tissues to help you detect moisture.

Clear outdoor drains and gutters
Make sure to take advantage of those sunny days and clear your outdoor drains and gutters of debris, such as leaves, dirt, and sticks. Clogged drains and gutters can cause water backup, leading to potential water damage to your property.

Be energy efficient

Installing a programmable thermostat will allow you to set temperature schedules based on your needs. By doing this, you can save energy by not heating or cooling the house unnecessarily when no one is home.

Maintain heating functionality
Running your heating at least once a month is a good way to ensure that it’s still functioning properly. If left off for extended periods, pumps and valves can seize up. Think of it like turning your car on occasionally to run the engine when it’s not being used frequently.

Trim foliage around electrics
Make sure to trim back any trees, shrubs, or other vegetation near power lines, electrical panels, and outdoor fixtures. Overgrown branches can pose a risk of contact with electrical lines during storms or high winds.

Be mindful of outdoor lighting

If you have outdoor lighting, consider switching to energy-efficient LED bulbs, which consume less electricity. It is also really important to regularly check the wiring and connections of your outdoor lights, to ensure they are in good condition.
